Boulder Rural Fire Rescue is seeking dedicated and experienced individuals to join our esteemed team as Lateral Firefighter/Paramedics. Please note that this position is expected to be hired in late August or early September 2025, with a start date in the following weeks.

BRFR serves roughly 17,500 residents of a 25 square mile fire protection district. Our coverage area spans across urban, suburban, and rural regions surrounding the vibrant city of Boulder, Colorado. BRFR is an all-hazards Fire and Rescue Department providing Structural, Urban Interface and Wildland, Technical Rescue, Auto Extrication, HAZMAT, fire-based Paramedic ambulance transport, Public Education and safety inspections to our community. We operate a Paramedic Engine and ALS Transport Ambulance and run approximately 1,000 calls per year. 2) Physical Ability Test: Candidates must possess a current CPAT card at the time of application or arrange to take the Boulder Rural PAT. 

Candidates who do not already possess a current CPAT can visit https://www.aims.edu/academics/fire-science/cpat/ for more information and to schedule one through AIMS. If you do not upload a current CPAT card with your application, you will be contacted to schedule the Boulder Rural PAT if you are selected to continue in the application process. 

3) In-person skill assessments and employee panel interviews will take place the week of August 26th, 2025. You will be contacted if selected to move forward in the application process with more specific dates.

4) Conditional Offers will be made in late August or early September 2025.

Mandatory Qualifications and Requirements

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. At least 21 years of age. 
  3. Possess and maintain a current, unrestricted Colorado driver’s license with an acceptable driving record or out-of-state license with the ability to obtain a Colorado driver's license within one year of hire.
  4. Have 1 year of full-time (paid) firefighting experience (not to include time in a Fire Academy) or 3 years of volunteer firefighting experience while holding Firefighter I or higher certification.
  5. 1+ Year of experience as a Paramedic in a high-volume system.
  6. Possess and maintain a State of Colorado Firefighter I certification or higher.
  7. Possess and maintain a State of Colorado Hazmat Operations certification.
  8. Possess and maintain NWCG Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) or higher.
  9. Possess and maintain NREMT-P and/or State of Colorado EMT-P (Paramedic) certification.
  10. Possess and maintain current ACLS, PALS, and BLS certifications.
  11. Possess and maintain ICS 100, 200, 700, 800. 
  12. Pass BRFR’s Physical Agility Test within the period established by BRFR or hold a current CPAT. 
  13. Must complete on-board training within 90 days of hire. 

* Firefighter I and Hazmat Operations certifications with a ProBoard or IFSAC seal may be considered for reciprocity by the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC). For the purposes of this hiring, applicants who wish to pursue reciprocity must do so on their own and be able to provide DFPC-issued certifications to Boulder Rural Fire Rescue by the application deadline. Desired Qualifications and Requirements

  1. Possess and maintain Colorado Driver Operator Utility Certification or higher.
  2. Possess and maintain a State of Colorado Firefighter II certification or higher 
  3. Possess and maintain Blue Card training/certification.
  4. Possess and maintain EKG interpretation training/certification. 

 

Additional Information
 

The required certifications must be attached to the application; otherwise, you may be disqualified.

Lateral Hires will be placed in and compensated for the grade at which they qualify on their date of hire with the District.

Firefighters hired as a Lateral Hire will be required to complete a third-seat (3rd) seat training program, complete IV therapy training, and obtain ICS 100 and ICS 700 certifications within three (3) months from their hire date unless already held.
